Who is this for?
If your team is involved in moving, lifting, or supporting loads of any kind, this course is designed for you.
Manual handling injuries are the leading cause of lost workdays in the UK across all sectors. This course is ideal for staff who regularly handle equipment, materials, or stock, as well as those navigating challenging or restricted work environments. Whether you are a novice or an experienced professional, this training provides the advanced insight needed to protect your long-term health and meet your legal duties.
Delivery: Available online with a tutor-led class, at our training centres, or at your location.
Certification: This course is our own 2020 Certified.
What you should expect from this course
This course goes beyond simple “bend your knees” advice to deliver an in-depth exploration of biomechanics and ergonomics. Through scenario-based discussions and practical content, learners are taught how to handle the specific “awkward” loads found in their respective industries.
By feeding off the experience of the trainer and other learners, you will learn how to apply the TILEO assessment framework and our signature 1–5 Audit Scale to every lift. You will gain a deep understanding of how the spine works and how to use mechanical aids to minimise the risk of career-changing injuries.
Learning Outcomes
Anatomy of the Lift: Understand the spine, discs, and muscles. Learn how “minor” repetitive lifts can lead to major long-term musculoskeletal disorders.
Legal Frameworks: Master the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (MHOR) and the specific duties of both employers and employees.
TILEO Risk Assessment: Learn to break down every task by Task, Individual, Load, Environment, and Other factors, including how to perform a Dynamic Risk Assessment (DRA) on-site.
Biomechanics & The Lever Effect: Discover the physics of lifting—why even a light load can feel significantly heavier depending on your posture and centre of gravity.
Practical Techniques (Sector-Specific): Focused training on moving items in confined spaces, carrying materials across varying terrains, and handling unbalanced or unpredictable loads.
Pushing, Pulling & Team Lifts: Learn the safest methods for moving bulk items and how to coordinate with colleagues for safe and communicative team lifting.
Mechanical Aids & Vehicle Ergonomics: Identify the right tools for the job (such as trolleys or lifters) and how to load and unload vehicles or storage areas safely.
MHOR 1992 Compliance
Our training is underpinned by the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (as amended), ensuring all content aligns with the latest HSE legal and regulatory standards.
By using these regulations as the foundation, participants gain a clear understanding of the “Hierarchy of Control” in lifting: Avoid, Assess, and Reduce. This approach empowers learners to interpret and apply practical guidance confidently—ensuring that every time they perform a manual task, they have the tools to protect their health and their livelihood.
