Who is this for?

If your team handles cleaning chemicals, maintenance fluids, or works in environments where dust, fumes, and vapours are generated, this course is designed for you.

Ideal for both novices and experienced professionals, this course helps you meet evolving legal duties and demonstrate competence in line with HSE guidance. Whether you are managing internal maintenance teams or overseeing contractors, this course delivers the practical insight you need to stay compliant—and safe.

  • Delivery: Available Online with a tutor-led class, at our training centres, or at your location.

  • Certification: This course is our own 2020 Certified.

What you should expect from this course

This course goes beyond the basics to deliver an in-depth exploration of hazardous substance safety. Through scenario-based discussions and practical content, learners are taught how to identify risks—from bottled chemicals to process-generated hazards like silica dust—and how to apply the Hierarchy of Control.

By feeding off the experience of the Trainer and other learners, you will learn how to avoid exposure, understand the “slow-burner” effects of chronic disease, and master emergency spill procedures to safeguard yourself and others.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Legal Frameworks: Gain a clear understanding of the COSHH 2002 Regulations and the legal “must-haves” for employers and employees.

  2. Health & The Human Body: Identify the four routes of entry and the difference between acute and chronic health effects, with a focus on Occupational Asthma and Dermatitis.

  3. Decoding GHS & SDS: Learn to interpret the 9 Red Diamond symbols and extract the information that actually matters from a 16-section Safety Data Sheet (SDS).

  4. Identification in Maintenance: Learn to identify hazards common to your role, including cleaning agents, maintenance fluids (WD-40, oils), and process hazards like welding fumes or wood dust.

  5. The 8 Steps of COSHH: Master the risk assessment process, from identifying “sensitisers” to implementing health surveillance.

  6. Control Measures: Understand the Hierarchy of Control, including the importance of Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) and why PPE is the last line of defence.

COSHH 2002 Compliance

Our training is underpinned by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002, ensuring all content aligns with the latest legal and regulatory standards.

By using these regulations as the foundation, participants gain a clear understanding of their real-world responsibilities. This approach empowers learners to apply our signature 1–5 Audit Scale to chemical storage and use—whether they are managing a COSHH cabinet or transporting substances in a company van.
